Boehner: “The People of Iran Believe in Democracy and the Rule of Law, and We Should Support Them”

House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH)  issued the following statement after the House passed a bipartisan resolution expressing support for all Iranian citizens who struggle for freedom, human rights, civil liberties, and the protection of the rule of law:

 

"The people of Iran believe in democracy and the rule of law, and we should support their desire for free and fair elections in their country. Let's be clear: the real power structure in Iran is as determined to deny its citizens basic human rights and free elections as it is to becoming a regional nuclear power. Likewise, it is committed to destroying the Jewish state of Israel. The Administration should take a stronger stand against the Iranian regime, and that starts with sending the Iranian people the same message of support Congress sent them today. Moreover, the Administration should make it clear that the United States is not going to have dialogue with an Iranian regime that refuses civil liberties, denies its citizens free and fair elections, and aims to dominate a region through violence, terrorism, and nuclear weapons."
