WASHINGTON D.C. – Congressman Thaddeus McCotter (MI), Chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee, today condemned recent personal attacks on the integrity of the Commander, Multi-National Force – Iraq, General David Petraeus, and America’s leading diplomat in Iraq, Ambassador Ryan Crocker, days before their scheduled report to Congress on progress in Iraq: “These are Americans of unimpeachable integrity who are risking their lives to serve our nation against our enemy. They deserve the respect of a grateful nation, not the smears of some venal politicians. The same holds true of honest liberals who have personally witnessed the progress in Iraq and have had the political and moral courage to acknowledge it upon their return. They too, deserve the thanks of a grateful nation for their integrity and service to America.” McCotter then noted how these personal smears ironically bode well for the pending “Petraeus Report” on progress in Iraq: “It must be good news, the Leftists are shooting the messengers.” As for what he will focus on in the Petraeus Report, McCotter replied: “The key to the Petraeus counter-insurgency strategy is to end local support for the insurgency. As I have said for years, this must be accomplished through both the eradication of the insurgents and localized reconstruction efforts.” “When Gen. Petraeus delivers his report to Congress on September 10, all Americans must focus on the true measure of political progress in Iraq – tribal, local, and provincial support for liberty instead of the insurgency; and we must do so cognizant of this truth: The only way to ensure liberty for ourselves is to extend liberty to the oppressed.” |
